From cradle to adulthood my life was in a deep slump. I struggled to get out of this rut of always been in need with unfulfilled dreams and unsatisfied life. I labored virtually for everything, including the basic things of life such as sachet water and eating a healthy meal. Whenever there is an unexpected battle fear will grip me and I will backslide. That made me angry and resentful until I discovered a scriptural truth that revolutionized my thinking.
Psalms 127:2 Says “It is vain for you to rise up early to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so He giveth His beloved sleep” KJV. Other translations translated “the bread of sorrows” as “food earned by hard work”. The key to understanding this verse is in the phrase “eating food earned by hard work” it is the same word that was rendered “painful labor” in Genesis 3:17; it means food gotten through anxiety and painful experiences. It is not necessarily vain to wake up early and sleep late but to lengthen, the day with anxious toil shows a lack of trust in God. By contrast, the Lord gives sleep to the one He loves- the one who trusts in Him. One may work hard at worthwhile projects such as marriage, ministry, and financial security but it is the Lord’s involvement that makes the effort worthwhile and successful. There is perfect peace in these words. We can choose to toil endlessly on our own, struggling to achieve financial security, a great job, or a perfect home but without God’s help, it will be null and void. We can also choose to trust God, His counsel, and His will in our lives no matter what it may be. He may walk us through the very things we dread but He walks through them with us. He gives His beloved sleep, we are beloved to Him.
In all fairness, we cannot avoid labor but we can avoid anxiety and restlessness. We live in a deprived world as a consequence we will also meet situations that will tempt us to be anxious, uneasy, and keyed up but the attitude of our hearts in the midst of these will determine whether we will live a victorious Christian life in a needy world. If you’re His beloved the attitude should be that of trust. Only then can you experience the rest He has called us to- Mathew 11:28-30.
