February 25th 2023, Nigeria Elect a New President; the electoral process in view

The first breeze of the morning, cold and dusty blows the curtains swiftly. The scent of soap and freshly made breakfast. My heart anticipates and ponders about what the day holds, it is the 25th of February 2023, Nigeria.

As I approached the venue a discouraging crowd disorganized cue met my eyes, the noise of frustration and hunger. Babies crying and disoriented by the violent ways adults spoke on this day. I found a place to wait my turn, while we waited, phones were promised, and rice, wrappers, and money also by the use of a one-time use ATM Card (that’s a new one, brilliantly we are indeed known for trickery) of the sum of 5k to 10k were shared by PDP and APC Agents.  So you give them proof and you are giving some cheap thing but that’s not why I came.

Women, poverty-stricken and without education are always victims of such deceptions so I excuse a lot of them with my heart but my mind knows nothing goes for nothing on this part of the earth.

As I also pushed through the crowd, tear gas was thrown into the air, we ran just for a bit, coughing and teary but no one left, determined we stayed. I think desperation for change and healing for our dear Nigeria takes a hold of us more than the comfort of food or shade. This has to be worth it, this has to say something even here in Sokoto, whereas as a Christian you must sieve your words and beliefs while you pray for a miraculous justice, religious sentiments outweighs reason, suffering, or death.

We are here and we will keep giving the Light hoping someday they will be free indeed too, to desire freedom and great governance. So as we wait, resolved that this is how it will always be, a people out for a change and revolution not for some temporary morsel of food.

Let me remind you though of what we are on paper as a Nation. Nigeria is a federal republic with a presidential system of government. The Nigerian government conducts regular national and state-level elections to elect its leaders, including the President, Vice President, Governors, and members of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

The Nigerian government should be committed to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the people. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is responsible for conducting elections in Nigeria and ensuring that the process is transparent and inclusive.

The Nigerian government has taken several steps to strengthen the electoral process, including the use of technology to improve the accuracy and speed of vote counting, the deployment of security personnel to maintain law and order during elections, and the establishment of a legal framework to govern the conduct of elections.

However, despite these efforts, there have been instances of electoral violence and irregularities in past and unfortunately present elections in Nigeria.

Hope for Nigerians

Nigeria is a country with great potential, given its vast natural resources and young, dynamic population. However, the country also faces significant challenges, including poverty, corruption, insecurity, and political instability.

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope in Nigeria. Individuals, the government, and civil society organizations are working to address these issues and improve the lives of Nigerians.

Nigeria is indeed a complex nation. So are it’s people. However, irrespective of the situation we have found ourselves as Nigerians, we are hopeful to have a better future. We are determined as individuals to see to it that we do the best we can to save this country from eminent danger that’s so clearly palpable to a degree that practically everyone is saying a prayer for the soul of this country.
East or West, north or south, citizens agree on one thing: the need to change the status quo.
May we all hold our thoughts up to God for a speedy restoration of peace and harmony in this great and promising nation of ours.
