CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
A month had passed since David had been in camp. Thoughts of escape still lingered in his mind and he kept waiting for the right moment to come. It was now deep into the dry season and Dave warned Lilly to keep in mind that soon, he would set the place on fire.
Lilly had managed to get a matchbox from the guards as they roasted some meat and when she gave it to David, he was beyond ecstatic. Some of the prisoners had been briefed on what was going to happen and word slowly spread around camp. A day was picked for the rebellion. The women who slept by the guard’s side that night were instructed to stab the guards. When done, they were to pick the keys to the other cells and set the prisoners free.
On that day, David mobilized the prisoners in charge. When he signalled to them, all of them came out and started fires in strategic places. The women were asked to each pick each a child as they escaped. Those unable to run were assigned to an able person. Everywhere in camp was quiet but for the roar of flames.
“Hey, you,” David yelled at somebody, “grab the kids and run towards east. Don’t stop until you reach the town.” He shepherded them in what he hoped was the right direction, hoping that the police saw the smoke and came to their aid. One of the prisoners ran towards the women and the children. “Let’s go. Follow me! This way. Come on, be fast!”
“Excuse me, sir,” someone asked. “What do we do with the old and blind?”
“Carry them along. Nobody is to be left behind. Go! Go! Go! Go!”
Behind them, someone started shooting with a machine gun. David was surprised, especially as he thought all the guards had been murdered. He hated to imagine what that meant for him, and suddenly, when he discovered that Lilly was nowhere close to him, he started searching for her. Panic rose in his chest, but he found the courage to race back to the camp. Lilly was lying on the ground in her cell. She looked frightened and was unable to move. The metal bars were hot, molten. Smoked filled the room. Without a second thought, David kicked it in and dragged her out. She was coughing profusely.
“Are you okay? We have to go,“ he yelled…….
