David, The Poet King

I cannot remember being taught that David had a terrible flaw during my Sunday school days. Innocently as a child I remember him portrayed as brave for killing goliath as a boy. A poet and obedient child who went on errands for his Dad to take care of the Sheep on the field. our teachers emphasized also about chosen by God to be a king as a child. God chooses a poet over trained looking men. As a poet I always see myself as David, when out on the field. That my words of praise can shut the mouth of the lion.

Great what our Sunday school teachers were able to stare in us but they should have said more about the consequences of adultery, murder, incest, and their tiny destructive fruits such as; depression, death, lack, loneliness and separation from God. Would that have groomed some boys into better men? May be with truths exposed to the core, would have informed a little boy about the deadly consequences of rape, because a lot of children only get to hear about God at the church and during a religious studies at school. The story of David is bitter sweet for me. How can one who is called a man after God’s own heart be an adulterer and a murderer? Well, that is why God is not a man. The betrayal, the conspiracy and the aftermath of sin , paints out a shameful and regrettable consequence, that His Son Absalom had to die.

David is a human that once lived, a real person with hopes, fear, dreams, doubt and faith. David is not some character from a fairy tale. We can call him an imperfect King, but he once lived and God loved and used him. David Is such a prominent figure in the old testament. He is prominent because God anointed him and called him a man after his heart despite his imperfections. He was anointed and chosen specifically to save the people of God and rule righteously. He paints the path way for Jesus Christ the only sinless human. Yes fully human, fully God and sinless, the saviour of all man kind.

David is a strong and courageous but unassuming shepherd who becomes God’s choice to replace Saul as king of Israel. He is humble yet self-possessed, readily dismissing human opinion. His humility becomes clear early in his youth, when he kills the giant Goliath with a sling stone, declining the opportunity to use Saul’s royal armour. As king, his foremost quality is obedience to God. For example, when his wife expresses embarrassment at David’s dancing while he marches into Jerusalem, he rebukes her, boasting that he will embarrass himself so long as it pleases God. What a man!

David’s mercy to others displays his selflessness—a product of his strenuous commitment to ethical ideals. Although we see him abandon all ability to show mercy for Uriah, the first Husband of Bathsheba, one of His most skilful and loyal soldiers. It is hard to imagine a more noble and loyal character than that of Uriah. Although a Hittite by nationality, he was obviously at least a second generation Jew by religion for his name contains the ahi suffix for Jehovah and means the flame [or light] of Jehovah. Like his father-in-law, he was one of David’s “mighty men” (2 Sam. 23:39), a list so exclusive that it does not even include the name of Joab, the general of David’s forces and Uriah’s commander in battle. David seduced, impregnated his wife and killed him, Bathsheba the daughter of one of his mighty men Eliam and the grand daughter of Ahithophel who was the chief counselor of David and ranked even above the priests Abiathar and Jehoiada (1 Chron. 27:33, 34). So wise were his counsels that it was said of him, it “was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom” (2 Sam. 16:23) councillor who is at that time, a prophet who hard directly from God.

David was indeed skilful but undisciplined when it came to women. He must just have what he desires, could this aspect of His character be unlearned with time? We should applaud his sense of propriety in striking when he refrains from killing Saul while Saul has his back turned. David scorns the easy opportunity to attack because he feels it would be morally wrong to strike God’s current anointed ruler. As king, David forgives the kingdom’s traitors, and executes the traitors of his enemies. When his own rebellious son dies, David cries aloud in public, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom!” (2 Samuel 18:33). His weeping suggests the depth of a father’s blind love for his son. One can only imagine what he would have done to Absalom if he was not His Son? But that’s an analysis for another time. Do we speak about his love for Jonathan? Nope better in another article.

Seeds of revolt have already been planted in the northern tribes of Israel by David’s reign, and the kingdom’s unity may be on shaky ground. David’s mercy towards king Saul may also be interpreted as a product of his political aspirations. David refuses to kill Saul because he senses that whatever standards he imposes against the current king may one day be used against himself as ruler. King David shows mercy to his traitors, especially Absalom, because he wishes to quell emotions and court the graces of all his subjects. By this reading, David appears to be a pragmatist—one who acts not out of his or her ideals, but on the basis of what is practical or expedient. However, the Old Testament ultimately seems to suggest that David’s religious ideals do not conflict with his pragmatism.

Men can learn a lot from David’s skills as a warrior, he applied practical, spiritually inspired and wise intelligence, a loving father, a man who will always seek the mind and heart of God. His ability to ask for forgiveness, admit his faults and seek reconciliation. David’s anointing as a poet and musician paved way for him at countless times. He was constantly praising, worshiping and proclaiming the sovereignty of God Almighty.

He is a man after God’s own heart because He pursued the will and intent of God. Though imperfect like all human race, he humbly obeyed Gods commands. Relay on God’s grace like David did and you will excel. Remember you appreciated man and I believe in you. Stay lifted and at rest in His Love.

Hey poet! Be mindful  of your thoughts, don’t go around looking  from rooftops for inspiration. Look from within, God has deposited all that you need. Yes, look within your soul, pay attention to the voice of God and not some strange desires. Good art is honest, vulnerable and holy. Seek for the God kind of creativity. I also believe in you.

What you wrote made a bunch of sense. However, what about this?
what if you were to write a awesome title? I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your blog, however what if you added something that
grabbed a person’s attention? I mean David, The Poet King – Gotnamewrites is kinda vanilla.

You should peek at Yahoo’s front page and
see how they write article headlines to get viewers
to click. You might add a video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about everything’ve got to say.

In my opinion, it would bring your posts a little livelier.

Thank God for this motivating speech, Gotname. We can always look within us, fix our eyes on Jesus, and tune to flow – the rivers of living waters in our bellies. Then, trust God to wade deeper into God’s river right at the angle where unimaginable creativity is. The heart of a (righteous) person is deep waters, God’s anointed-reasoning draws out the creativity.

    How beautiful your words, Gotname.
