Nestled in the heart of Sokoto, Northern Nigeria, something remarkable happens each year.
Hasken Arewa Foundation’s annual summer camp isn’t just another event—it’s a space where young minds, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, are given a chance to grow and thrive.
Under the inspiring theme ‘Who Am I?’, this year’s summer camp brought together 30 kids for four days of learning, skill-building, and unforgettable experiences, continuing our mission to empower out-of-school children and young women in Northern Nigeria.
We’re driven by a vision: to create a society where every child and young woman can rise above challenges and achieve their potential.
This summer camp is a part of that journey, blending education, creativity, and essential life skills.
Let’s take a closer look at what made 2024 truly special.
Discovering Purpose: God’s Masterplan for You
One of the most powerful moments of the camp came from the executive director Hasken Rayuwa Afrika, Pastor Ibrahim Nathaniel, who reminded everyone that we all have a bigger purpose in life. He shared two scriptures—Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:15—that brought everything into perspective.
Pastor Nathaniel didn’t just talk at the kids; he connected with them. He reminded them that they weren’t just random people on earth, but individuals chosen by God with a unique purpose.
“You’re here for a reason,” he said. “You’ve got a role to play in helping others transition from the kingdom of darkness under Satan’s cruelty to the kingdom of God and light. Spread the love, and live out God’s plan for your life.” He added.
The theme of this year’s camp, “Who Am I?” tied perfectly into this message. The kids walked away with a clearer understanding of their identity—one not shaped by their circumstances, society, or background but by who they are in God. “You’re more than where you come from,” he told them. “You’re champions, created with purpose.”
Trauma Healing and Hope: Finding Freedom in God’s Love
Another touching session came from Mrs. Gotname Wealth Ibrahim, who shared her personal story of loss and healing. It was an emotional moment that opened the door for the children to talk about their own pain—whether from broken homes, personal loss, or tough life experiences.
With gentle strength, Mrs. Ibrahim reassured the kids that no matter what they’ve been through, God’s love is bigger than their pain. “You’re not defined by your past,” she told them. “God has a beautiful story for your future.”
The session was a turning point for many. Kids who had been holding back finally felt safe enough to share, and there was a sense of healing in the room. Through guided discussions and practical steps, they learned how to lean on their faith and trust God through life’s toughest moments.
Skill Acquisition: Turning Ideas Into Reality
At Hasken Arewa Foundation, we believe that learning goes beyond books. This year’s camp took skill acquisition to new heights. One of the standout sessions was led by a seasoned cosmetologist, where the children learned the art of making hair cream using a blend of chemicals, herbs, fragrances, and essential ingredients.
The session was more than just a lesson—it was an experience. The kids were walked through every step, from handling the ingredients to the safety measures involved in the process. They watched closely as raw materials transformed into a final product, each child actively participating and asking thoughtful questions. By the end, they weren’t just learning how to make hair cream—they were also introduced to the business side of things, like marketing strategies and customer engagement. The kids proudly packaged their creations, leaving with more than just a skill—they left with a sense of accomplishment and a spark of inspiration.
Photograph: Seeing Life Through a Different Lens
Another unforgettable experience was the photography session. Many of the children held a camera for the first time, and under the guidance of an experienced photographer, they quickly learned how to frame a shot, understand lighting, and capture moments that matter.
What stood out was how this simple activity helped build their confidence. As they explored angles and perspectives, they began to see their world differently. Photography became a way for them to tell their own stories, creating a sense of empowerment that stayed with them throughout the camp.
Poetry: Giving a Voice to the Girl Child
At Hasken Arewa, we believe that every girl’s story deserves to be heard. This year, our poetry competition focused on empowering the Northern Nigerian girl child, and it was nothing short of moving. Five brave participants stood up and shared their poems, each one speaking to the struggles, hopes, and strength of girls in the region.
Their words were powerful, tackling topics like societal expectations, economic barriers, and the resilience it takes to overcome them. The competition wasn’t just about winning—it was about amplifying voices that often go unheard. In the end, every participant walked away with cash prizes. And more importantly, encouragement to keep speaking up.
Art and Faith: Exploring Biblical Stories Through Creativity
We also provided a unique way for the children to express their faith through art. In this session, they were given the opportunity to bring biblical characters to life on paper. With a full art kit—colors, pencils, rulers, and drawing books—the kids let their imaginations take over.
Guided by instructors, they worked in groups to create images inspired by their favorite stories from the Bible. This wasn’t just an art class; it was a chance for them to reflect on values, creativity, and self-expression, all while deepening their spiritual understanding.
Life Skills: Lessons That Last
Beyond the creative and entrepreneurial activities, this camp focused on essential life skills. We had interactive sessions that helped the children develop their communication and social skills, as well as build empathy and learn about peer pressure. These are lessons that go beyond the classroom, preparing them for the challenges life may throw their way.
Through activities and discussions, the kids learned the importance of evengelism, effective communication, showing compassion, and making positive choices. By creating an environment of support and understanding, we’re helping to raise individuals who can navigate their future with confidence.
Playtime and Bonding: Fun with Purpose, Building Connections
Of course, it wasn’t all work. The children also had plenty of time for games and outdoor fun, which gave them a chance to bond and build friendships. Whether it was through football matches, scrabbles, rope skipping, or table tennis, these moments of joy and laughter played an important role in the camp experience.
But the fun didn’t end there!
One of the highlights was the museum excursion.
It was a resounding success, leaving an indelible mark on the children’s minds.
As they rode the bus, anticipation built up, culminating in an awe-inspiring exploration of Nigeria’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The museum’s vast collection of artifacts, traditional crafts, and historical exhibits captivated the children’s imagination:
– Pictures of past and present Nigerian leaders/Sultans of Sokoto, some dating back hundreds of years, sparked curiosity.
– Ancient armor, amulets, and charms revealed the region’s storied past.
– Countless exhibits, meticulously arranged in shelves and glass boxes, showcased the nation’s diverse cultural heritage.
The centerpiece of the exhibit was a majestic green 1950s Chevrolet, once used by the Premier. Its imposing size, sturdy tires, and vintage charm left the children speechless.
At the end of the four days, the 2024 Hasken Arewa Foundation Summer Camp left a lasting impact. These children didn’t just gain new skills—they gained confidence, a sense of purpose, and memories that will last a lifetime.
This camp is about empowering the next generation to rise above challenges and become the leaders they’re destined to be. Whether through art, poetry, business, or life skills, we’re committed to giving every child the opportunity to shine.
And as we look ahead, we remain dedicated to creating a brighter future for the children of Northern Nigeria—one camp, one skill, one voice at a time.
