Poverty and Women can’t Work: Hasken Arewa Foundation Initiative

A mother’s role is so important it can not be over-emphasized. In our world today we need to intentionally define what a mother or woman is and so we say that she is a female parent who has given birth to, adopted, or raised a child.

Mothers play a critical function whether poor or rich, educated or illiterate in the care and upbringing of their children, providing emotional support, guidance, and nurturing. The relationship between a mother and her child is often considered to be one of the most important and influential relationships in a person’s life.

Mothers come from all walks of life, and there are many different types of mothers, including biological mothers, stepmothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, and grandmothers who take on a motherly role in their grandchildren’s lives. While the definition of a mother may vary depending on cultural, social, and legal contexts, the common thread is the love and care that mothers provide to their children. It is unfortunate that mothers or women in general face a life-threatening condition called “poverty” through out Africa especially Northern Nigeria.

Poverty has a disproportionate impact on Women/Mothers compared to men, as women are often more likely to be living in poverty and face greater challenges in escaping it. Here are some of the effects of poverty on women:

1. Limited access to education: Girls are more likely to drop out of school due to poverty, which limits their access to education and the opportunities that come with it.

2. Limited access to healthcare: Women living in poverty are less likely to have access to quality healthcare, which can result in untreated illnesses and chronic health problems.

3. Higher risk of violence: Women living in poverty are at higher risk of experiencing violence, including domestic violence and sexual assault.

4. Limited job opportunities: Women living in poverty often have limited access to job opportunities due to a lack of education and skills, discrimination, and other factors.

5. Limited access to financial resources: Women living in poverty often lack access to financial resources, such as credit and savings, which can make it difficult for them to start or grow a business, or even to meet basic needs.

6. Increased caregiving responsibilities: Women living in poverty often have increased caregiving responsibilities, which can limit their ability to work outside the home and earn a living.

Overall, poverty has a significant impact on the lives of women, limiting their opportunities and increasing their vulnerability to a range of social, economic, and health challenges. How do we change this collectively and make life bearable for women, especially in rural areas, especially in the northern part of Nigeria?

There is a way out though, where there is a will; We can make healthcare facilities available, Give them soft loans, Food gifts and teach them new skills, counsel them on Financial intelligence, and pray with them.

So what will you do today to support a Mother? I believe in you and love you richly.
