Songs of Solomon

“May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your love is better than wine.”

Writing and reading of poems is refreshing. It is like taking in your favorite meal and never getting fat. Consuming the literary devices used to capture the essence of a theme is therapeutic. Those lines above ignites The most precious feelings and memories of sweet love. As a woman I identify with The passionate longing spoken by her delicate but disciplined heart. The song of songs, also known as the songs of Solomon is a condensed narrative song of ancient Israelite love poems. These poems which are written in 8 chapters, are meant to be read without the unique refrain of chapters. It celebrates the beauty and power of God’s gifts of love and sexual desire. This intrinsic poetry, is taken to be the songs of songs as one will say the King of kings. That is to say that, it is the leading outstanding songs of all songs. A love song in the bible, a love poem about desires right in the old testament. I will paint out its glorious features.

We see a “lovely” poem neatly arrange inform of an allegory. With thought provocative themes such as; The consistent intense desire portrayed by constant searching, the joy of physical attraction, love cannot be bought, self control and the fathers love. it has a beginning, a middle and an open ended conclusion which brings out the significance of a major attribute of love never ending. It’s never ending quest to rediscover one’s beloved and please them as they should be. There is more to learn of the wisdom strung through every line in the text, about handling the fiery passions of sexual desire. Allegories of God’s love for His people are also woven through the poem, bringing light to the purpose of the intentions and motives of God for creating such a phenomenal entity called love. His own standards of how a marriage relationship ought to be vulnerable, void of lustful selfishness that breeds sins. We learn that, there is the place, time and purpose of sexual desire, and that is in the institution of marriage. The tenacity of the woman’s loyalty to her Lover the bridegroom, is painted by every pulse of her voice imbedded in the text.

What can we take away from this?Firstly, this tale of two Lovers introduces them, as individuals who are likely betrothed or married. They declare their love for each other, expressing the meaning behind the allegories and imagery. ‘Seeking and Finding’. The two lovers constantly search for each other and reunite in the song, further demonstrating the great power and mystery of love touching our hearts. Secondly, we learn that sexual desire is a gift, God created it for humans to enjoy but correctly applied in marriage. Thirdly, though the lover were captivated and overwhelmed by each other, the woman methodically reminds readers not to wake passion until the right time. Lastly, God’s love for His people is powerful and unending. this symbolism has translated into both Jewish and Christian biblical interpretations.

The Jewish traditions translate this poem as an allegorical song, in which the man stands for God, the woman stands for Israel and love is a symbolic of the covenant that God has with
Israel at mount Sinai. While the Christian traditions, get their inspiration from Paul in Ephesians 5 where Christ love for His people is compared to the way the man need to treat his wife. The images of the garden, gives one a nostalgic feeling of the garden of Eden, of how things should have been before sin corrupted Adam.

It is indeed an interesting love poem which will inspire genuine love in marriage and your intimate relationship with God our Father and lover.
